Google reveals TVNZ's website vulnerability

In spite of what some of you might think, considering some of my previous posts about tvnz, I was not meaning any harm when I found this. I was watching something on tv on Sunday night, when one of those tvnz 6 ads showed up. I was wondering about tvnz 7 so I opened goolgle and searched for: "tvnz7". First results was from Rapid TV news, but the second one caught my geek eye: "Index of /tvnz_images/tvnz7".

tvnzoops

I had a quick browse and all the folders under that folder were open and unprotected. What was worse, potentially "sensible" information about their systems was also exposed.

I've emailed TVNZ letting them know of this security risk. I'll keep you posted :)

Mandatory angry TVNZ post

If there was a model not to follow when it comes to promoting and programming TV, I'd have to say that would be TVNZ. Here are two things NOT TO DO if you own a TV channel:

  • Even though they spent most of January promoting the new season of Lost. On the first Wednesday of Feb, it started. A shame that they only started promoting it a day before. So they created a massive campaign to promote the new season, but they didn't announce the starting day with a big fanfare? That it stupid
  • Same thing happened to the new Desperate Housewives season. But it was even worse, because the announced 2 hour special, were actually the two last episodes of the previous one.

Maybe I could add that they spend, every-single-good-tv-series, in the first 4-6 months of the year leaving the craptastic homemade reality shows for the rest AND that they start seasons in awfully-odd time like... November, so that nobody watches them during the holiday season. Smart moves guys...
